Profile

The modest front room of interior designer Steven Sclaroff’s store is deceptive: Venture through a small door in the back and you’ll happen upon a vast world of vintage furniture and art, arranged as it might be in a Palm Springs vacation home (liquor-stocked kitchen included). Though Sclaroff’s selection of items is mostly governed by the whimsy of his impeccable taste, Sclaroff tends toward twentieth-century American and European pieces with simple lines and gentlemanly appeal. He also has no trouble taking something he likes then changing what he doesn’t, whether it’s reupholstering a “terrible eighties” couch or dismembering a mid-century lamp and using its base for his own devices. Expect to find offbeat odds and ends scattered about, as Sclaroff is fond of mixing in bizarre items “that no one’s really looking for” like tabletop sculptures of woodland creatures or psychedelic posters of Jesus Christ.
