Housed in the former Limelight (once the Holy Communion Episcopal), Avalon sees no reason for the separation between the Church and the State Liquor Authority. And even those who weren't there for the disco bloodbath days of Michael Alig and Peter Gatien will be a little awestruck as they explore the nooks of the grand neo-Gothic manse with a drink in hand. The Boston-based owners have added some modern touches, too, such as a pod-like DJ booth that hovers between the two balconies overlooking the dance floor. Upstairs, the tree-adorned, semi-exclusive Spider Club slightly resembles Bungalow 8 once you've consumed enough cocktails from plastic cups. Go-go dancers and other performers occasionally mingle with the barely-legal patrons, however a space like this needs to be full to be fun and the promoters just can't seem to get enough bodies. In short, the party isn't as divine as the soaring architecture. Live rock shows—added to the roster in early 2006—pray to change that. — Andrew Paine Bradbury
