Profile
The glowing ceramic fronds of Jeremy Cole’s hanging lamps lure passersby off this quiet cobblestone stretch of Wooster Street and into Property’s boutique where a playful modernism dominates via sleek, bare-bones furnishings such as indoor/outdoor molded plastic chairs and asymmetrical, bent-plywood bookcases. Though most of the stock is the work of contemporary avant-garde Italian and British designers, there are a few mid-century pieces, such as the 1957 hanging-bamboo-and-rattan chair by Giovanni Travasa. And while the shag carpeting and beanbag chairs provide a whiff of retro, most everything else forgoes avocado and harvest-gold color palettes for neutral-toned designs that emphasize smooth, spare planes and clean, curved lines. With options like glowing acrylic globes, crystalline Plexiglas shafts, and brightly colored conical floor lamps that bow at quirky angles, lighting purchased from Property will provide as much conversation as illumination.
