Web/Interaction Designer
Nymag.com is always on the lookout for web designers to work with our user experience design team -- as of May 2008, we have a three-month freelance opportunity.
The interaction designer works with the information architect, web technologist, and other members of the design and development teams to realize user-centered, beautiful, production-friendly designs for page templates, site navigation, search applications, and other user interface elements and features of nymag.com.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Experience designing template-based sites or applications
- Strong functional knowledge of web presentation and UI technologies, particularly in terms of web standards
- The eye of a graphic designer and the mind of an information architect
- The assumption that elegance in function and beauty in visual design are not mutually exclusive
- Capacity to work effectively in collaboration with others to achieve shared goals
- Excellent communication skills
- Enthusiasm, curiosity, and flexibility
- At least three years’ experience as a web designer
- A portfolio that demonstrates all of the above
Additional web development skills (CSS, XHTML, standards-minded Javascript, Flash/Actionscript) are a big plus.
This is a junior- to mid-level position reporting to the design director.

Online Editorial Interns
Description: New York Magazine’s Website, nymag.com, is looking for spring semester online editorial interns who can work a minimum of two full days per week. Responsibilities include database production, fact-checking, research, reporting, and writing.
Pay: $7.15/hour or school credit

Freelance Copyeditor
Description: New York Magazine's Web team is looking for freelance copy editors to help out from time to time on special projects. Copy editors will edit blog posts, section pages, event listings, and newsletters in a fast-paced environment. Must have a strong command of grammar and an eye for detail. Should be familiar with Words Into Type. Experience using Movable Type and Dreamweaver a plus. Position is part-time.

Unpaid intern needed for the spring semester (beginning in January) for 3-5 days per week to assist the Communications, Strategy and Business Development department. Great opportunity for anyone looking to break into public relations or magazine publishing. Intern must be able to receive school credit. The intern will be expected to:
- Experience designing template-based sites or applications
- help with daily and weekly press packet compilation and distribution
- manage, organize, and grow lists of media contacts
- research new business development ideas
- plan, staff, and attend occasional evening events for the magazine
