Profile

After a daylong visit to what they deemed a mediocre spa, Jonathan Ho and Kathy Yan adopted a “here’s what we’d do differently” gusto and set about building their own oasis from scratch. One of the couple’s chief pet peeves: overly feminine décor that made Ho, a former Wall Streeter, feel out of place. So instead of frilly floral patterns, Ohm sports clean lines and a palette of sky blue and chocolate brown–gender-neutral hues that attract the urban professionals who work nearby, and don’t scare men away. The services are correspondingly straightforward: Massages are available in targeted sessions that hit just the muscle groups that give you problems (massage therapists are hand-picked by Yan, a physical therapist), and facials rely on Dermalogica products as well as Plantogen, a plant-based line from New Zealand. Snacks, tea and fruit-infused water await clients in the waiting area and, adding to the chill atmosphere, mini aquariums of Siamese fighting fish are everywhere–on tables, affixed to walls, and even on the floor under the massage-table face cradles. Most extravagant is the manicure room, where clients sit in Hammacher Schlemmer-worthy iJoy massage chairs and watch movies on two flat-screen TVs.

In full disclosure, I'm the type of spa consumer who hopes for great services, but longs for a lovely/comfortable spa setting. Sadly, entering Ohm spa is like entering someone's cramped nyc apartment. Sure the place was clean, but...Read More
