Profile

Since the mid-nineties, Bliss has become a household name nearly synonymous with the words “day spa.” Opened in 1999, the 57th Street location is sebum-obsessed celebrity esthetician Marcia Kilgore’s second and most intimate (i.e. smallest) Manhattan outpost. In its nine treatment rooms, Upper East Side mommies who’ve left their kids with the nanny get kneaded, rubbed down, exfoliated, and tightened up. Guests are met at reception with a locker key, robe, bottled water, and flip-flops. Bathrooms are stocked with Bliss products, as well as little things like Q-tips and combs. A cozy waiting room offers refreshments and gourmet snacks, all of which helps create the feeling that even the tiniest needs are looked after. The decor makes interesting use of texture: feathers sandwiched between frosted glass, grey suede walls, shaggy wool ottomans, sea glass-like shower tiles. But the sensual atmosphere and extra details aren’t what has made this spa so busy: It’s the quality of the services. The staff is one hundred percent present, and inclined to explain exactly what they’re doing, without obtruding on the relaxation factor. There’s no separate nail area, so manis and pedis are only performed during facials. There’s also no designated men’s lounge, like at the downtown spa, but male clients are very welcome and will be accommodated with private changing and waiting rooms.

Sales

Unlike most spas, Bliss offers no discounts, even for services booked as a package. They do, however, offer a ten percent discount on beauty products purchased during your birthday month.

Bridal
This day spa is as popular as ever with the young and trendy, who love the triple-oxygen facial and carrot-and-sesame body buff. Book a few months ahead.
