Profile

This venue is now closed.

This alluring basement space has gone through many changes since it opened in 1855 as a beer hall modeled after a German rathskeller: It’s been a speakeasy, a rock club, an S&M lair, and finally media-mixer favorite Table 50. In 2006, with pretty much the same décor and candlelit lighting as it penultimate manifestation, it returned to yet another of its previous roles— that of a gay disco. The small dance floor vaulted by a low brick ceiling encourages the ferociously fashionable East-meets-West Village crowd to get up close and personal to electro, house, funk, and smart party music provided by a rotating array of D.J.s. To the side are narrow cloisters with luxurious leather couches and low tables. Near the dance floor, they offer a voyeuristic view of the action. Across from the well-endowed bar serving up drinks such as Mr. Black Smash (a fizzy, fruity drink spiked with Chambord, champagne, and gin), they offer all the sound separation and seclusion of a lounge. Ultimately, though, the bumping sound system and occasional enticements like go-go boys and catwalk competitions gets everyone off their feet.
