The Scandinavia House provides an enlightening, authentic Nordic experience, particularly for those whose brush with Scandinavian culture has been limited to trips to Ikea. Dedicated to all aspects of the blonde region, the modern space embraces the traditions of the five Nordic countries—Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The sleek building was designed by the Polshek Partnership and its simple elegance is reflective of Nordic design aesthetics. The design also works well with the modern and contemporary paintings by well-known artists featured in the galleries upstairs. On the downstairs level, the Victor Borge Hall hosts lectures, concerts and film screenings. A special library houses Scandinavian books, newspapers, magazines, scholarly journals and magazines. Finally, visitors who want a taste of the regional food can stop at the small Scandinavian café operated by the chic Swedish restaurant Aquavit for a coffee or smorgasbord. On the same floor is a gift shop featuring Nordic books for adults and children as well as assorted jewelry, trinkets and specialty food items. — Ben Mathis-Lilley

Named in honor of the 1955 Nobel laureate from Iceland, this small library offers everything from academic journals to videos to recent newspapers from the homeland. There’s also a genealogical database to look up long-lost relatives. Wed.—Thu. and Sat., noon—5 p.m.; Sun.—Tue. and Fri., closed.

AQ Café
Enjoy some of the same Scandinavian delicacies offered at Aquavit (except the actual potato liquor namesake available at the restaurant) at relatively low prices for a snack or lunch. Smoked meats abound on the menu. Mon-Sat, 10a.m.—5 p.m.; Sun., closed.

If You Have Kids...
Bright and welcoming, the Heimbold Family Children's Learning Center opens its doors to families and children ages three to 10 with books, toys, workshops and parties. Sat., noon—5 p.m.; Sun.—Fri., closed.
