‘Frost/Nixon’ Trailer: Come On, Guys, Frank Langella Doesn’t Sound THAT Much Like Batman

Tagline: "In 1974, President Nixon resigned to hide the truth…"

Translation: …that he was actually a caped crime fighter.

The Verdict: Frank Langella may have won a well-earned Tony for his role as Richard Nixon in Peter Morgan's stage version of Frost/Nixon, but that doesn't mean the blogosphere is happy about his casting in the film version. "Langella is an amazing actor and has the mannerisms down, but he really doesn't look like Nixon," declares /Film this morning, over the just-released international trailer. "Just from watching this," says Videogum, "I learned that Richard Nixon was the inspiration for Batman's voice in The Dark Knight." Fair enough, but everything else looks pretty great and we're perfectly willing to suspend our disbelief for a couple of hours, since we can't really think of any actors ugly or abrasive enough to actually portray Nixon realistically. Come on, who else could they have gotten? Jerry Stiller?

‘90210’ Trailer: Brenda! Kelly! Some Other People!

Tagline: "Old friends. New faces. Same ZIP."

Translation: There are, ostensibly, other people on this show too!

The verdict: The CW did not take Defamer's advice to keep Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth hidden from sight like the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, thank God, because even a quick glimpse of Brenda and Kelly was all we needed to be sent straight back to high school. We guess there are some other people on the new 90210 — a cursory search of our SEO-unfriendly 902102 tag reminds us that The Wire's Tristan Wilds is in the cast, plus a bunch of kids we don't care about but who presumably possess hot bods, capped teeth, and emotional crises befitting "The show that defined a generation." We just hope Scott Scanlon comes back from the dead!

‘What Just Happened?’ Trailer: Are We Ready to Like Robert De Niro Again?

Tagline: "This is Ben's life."

Translation: This is Robert De Niro not acting like a caricature of himself or being in a Ben Stiller movie.

The Verdict: Seriously, how great would it be to like Robert De Niro again? It's been such a lot of Stardust and Meet the Parents and Analyze This (and, of course, That). And we're really not that sure about Righteous Kill, where he and Al Pacino seem to be doing some kind of command-performance, "Simon and Garfunkel in Central Park" thing. But What Just Happened?, directed by Barry Levinson and based on producer Art Linson's book about his life as a Hollywood producer, looks like it might be … well, at least a big step up from Meet the Fockers. Though the film didn't sell at Sundance and seems to already have the word "troubled" attached to it, the idea of De Niro chasing around a wackadoo, ZZ Top–bearded Bruce Willis (Willis's portrayal of himself is allegedly based on an incident involving Alec Baldwin) isn't without its charms. There are a lot of reliable supporting types involved, including Stanley Tucci, Catherine Keener, and John Turturro, so even if it is troubled, we sort of want to see it. But not as much as we'd like to see Alec Baldwin and Bruce Willis get in a slap fight. —Linda Holmes

‘Che’ Trailer Promises We’ll See This Movie ‘Proximamente’

Tagline: "Mas alla del mito habla un hombre."

Translation:
"Beyond the myth, a man speaks," someday.

The Verdict: Though Steven Soderbergh's four-hour epic, which won the Best Actor prize at Cannes for Benecio del Toro, still awaits a distribution deal, hope appears on the horizon — or on YouTube, where an unsubtitled trailer has appeared for the Spanish-language film. Thanks to some bad sound and the fact that we took French in high school, we don't really know what anyone's saying, but it sure looks pretty gorgeous — even if the multiple shots of dudes marching through fields suggest a slightly more meditative pace than we like in our four-hour epics. (Soderbergh has reportedly rejected an offer that would require him to cut an hour.) Will it headline the New York Film Festival? Will it ever get U.S. release? All the trailer offers is a mysterious Proximamente.

‘Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist’ Trailer: Michael Cera Scores Again

Tagline: "This is Nick. He's bad at relationships."

Translation: But he's played by Michael Cera, which means he'll have sex approximately nineteen times before this movie is over.

The Verdict: How much longer can Hollywood possibly expect us to be surprised or charmed by the uncanny ability of geeky, hopeless characters portrayed by Michael Cera to awkwardly stumble into romantic success, seemingly with very little trouble? Has another actor scored more times onscreen in the past two years? Did Freddie Prinze Jr. ever have it this easy? Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist seems sort of cute, so whatever. But if you need any more proof that Judd Apatow has completely turned the world upside down, here it is: In this movie, Jay Baruchel plays a bully.

‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ Trailer: The Sorrows of Young Voldemort

Tagline: "To know the future, visit the past."

Translation: Get ready for more flashbacks than a season-one episode of Lost.

The verdict: The teaser for this fall's adaptation of the sixth Harry Potter novel plays it spooky and straight, focusing on Harry's dips into the Pensieve to experience the life and times of Tom Riddle, with only tiny glimpses of the movie's present-day story. (That's fitting, since Voldemort's chilling origin is the part of the novel that sticks in the memory, rather than the book's comparatively pedestrian tales of Hogwarts romance.) Front and center in the teaser is Hero Fiennes-Tiffin, Ralph Fiennes's nephew, as li'l Voldemort, and he looks just as creepy as we'd hoped. In fact, the entire trailer looks even better than we expected, lending credence to the notion that as the Potter movies move further away from those first, awful Chris Columbus films, they're becoming better and better, approaching the artistic heights of the books themselves.

‘W.’ Trailer: Even Oliver Stone Wants to Be Judd Apatow

Tagline: "If I remember correctly, you didn't like the sporting goods job. Working in the investment firm wasn't for you either. Or the oil rig job. You didn't exactly finish up with flying colors in the Air National Guard, junior … What are you cut out for?"

Translation: The parts of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly will be played here by Josh Brolin.

The Verdict: In April, when we posited that Oliver Stone's upcoming Bush biopic W. would be the surprise comedy hit of 2008, we were kidding, mostly. So, you can imagine our delight and surprise when we saw this brand-new teaser trailer and realized that Stone intends to market this thing like a spiritual sequel to Step Brothers. Yes, we know this is supposed to be a tragedy, but come on — the music! The drunk fighting! That funny face Josh Brolin is making the whole time! — doesn't this actually look like it might turn out inappropriately (and intentionally) funny? Count us officially excited.

‘Yes Man’ Trailer: Jim Carrey Forced to Do Another Thing, for a Movie’s Entire Length, for No Apparent Reason

Tagline: This Christmas, Carl is about to discover what he's always been missing.

Translation: Carl is a once-cranky guy whose life will be changed forever by the transformative power of bungee jumping.

The Verdict: In Liar Liar, Jim Carrey starred as a lawyer forced by his son's birthday wish to always tell the truth. Now, in Yes Man, he plays a guy who challenges himself to answer "yes" to every question for an entire year. (Also, in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls he was a pet detective bound by his contract with Warner Bros. to do most of his talking out of his butt.) What inexplicable repeatable action will Carrey be forced to take in his next movie? Will he scuttle his chances at employment when stricken with a mental condition that makes him honestly answer that job-interview question about one's biggest weaknesses? Or have his life ruined when he falls under an ancient curse that mandates he order sweet-and-sour pork every time he enters a Chinese restaurant? That said — and we know this is faint praise — this probably looks like his most promising comedy in more than a decade.

‘Surfer, Dude’: Matthew McConaughey Takes Art of Non-Acting to Bold New Heights

Tagline: "I'm not some ass clown in a green room — I'm a surfer, dude."

Translation: Right now someone deeply regrets giving Matthew McConaughey his own production company.

The Verdict: For anyone under the ludicrous impression that being Matthew McConaughey is easy, he has wonderful news: It is! In Surfer, Dude, the first film from the actor's production company j.k. livin' (capitalization is hard work, man), he plays Steve Addington, the titular dude whose lofty, lazy ideals are somehow almost compromised when he's asked to be motion-captured for a video game (amazingly, there is a script and McConaughey had nothing to do with it). Really, though, this looks less like a movie and more like a ploy to have someone else foot the weed bill for a summer (thanks, Anchor Bay!); he and his friends (including Woody Harrelson and Willie Nelson) appear to be doing pretty much all the things you assume they do when cameras aren't rolling (it's unclear if any of them knew they were acting in a film). Even so, to a daydreaming employee in an East Coast office governed by an Orwellian mandatory shirt-wearing ordinance, this actually sort of looks like stupid, Netflixable fun.

‘Body of Lies’ Trailer Also Released Today

Tagline: "Our world is a lot simpler to put to an end than you might think."

Translation: What? Sorry, we got distracted by something else.

The Verdict: Whoa, there's Osterman getting nuked into Doctor Manhattan! Holy crap, look at Archie! We've always liked this Smashing Pumpkins song, too. God, this looks exactly like the comic. Oh wow, this is the part where they break Rorschach out of Sing Sing. Did you hear Zack Snyder is keeping the original ending? Man, this is going to be sweet.
