- Loews E-Walk, screens 12 and 13
-
247 W. 42nd St.; 212-505-6397
While the movies you’ll see here—Norbit, The Astronaut Farmer—aren’t gems, screens 12 and 13 are. First of all, they have a size and sound system that are unrivaled among the city’s bigger theaters, along with first-rate projection. The theater’s not superclean, but it’s better than it used to be, when it showed porn films. Located across from the AMC Empire 25 in Times Square, the E-Walk can attract a participatory crowd. Best to go during off-hours, when the space is so empty it feels like a private screening room.

Competition breeds the best. If only one pizzeria existed in New York, of course, there’d be no real winning slice. Thankfully, we’ll never know what that sorry situation tastes like, since pizza—like dance parties, dog runs, and fried chicken—has to evolve upward here.
